Every rule change, every extra deck added to the shoe, every continuous shuffling machine came onto a blackjack table since the 1980s traces back to one core mathematical fact: blackjack is a dependent-events game. Understanding what that actually means explains not just why card counting works, but why the entire game had to evolve to survive it. What Makes an Event "Dependent"? In games like roulette or craps, every spin or roll is a fresh, independent event. The wheel has no memory of the last spin. The dice don't care what came before. Whatever happened last round has zero effect on what happens next. Blackjack doesn't work that way. Every card dealt permanently changes what's left in the deck. Pull out four aces, and the odds of the next hand being a blackjack is zero. Pull out a run of small cards, and the remaining deck becomes richer in tens and aces — better for the player. That's dependency: each event changes the odds of the one that follows. Why This Made Us Dangerous Card counters exploit dependency by tracking which cards have already come out, estimating how favorable the remaining deck is, and betting accordingly. That's legal, math-based advantage play. What we did was different, but it depended on the exact same underlying principle. Controlling a slug of cards through a shuffle, knowing the in-between number, beating the cut — all relied on math. Single and double-deck games meant a small enough card pool that controlling a handful of specific cards had real, predictable impact on the next hand dealt. It was a winner. That's the part people rarely think about: card counting and physical cheating both exist because of the same mathematical property. One exploits it through observation. The other exploits it through control. Neither would work in a game built on independent events. How the Industry Fought Back Once casinos understood that dependency was the vulnerability, the countermeasures that followed all make sense as a single, connected story: More decks in the shoe diluted how much any single card removed actually shifted the odds. Earlier cut-card placement shortened the window where a counted or controlled deck stayed useful. And continuous shuffling machines were the final answer — reshuffling after every hand effectively resets the deck's dependency before it can ever be exploited, whether by counting or by control. What This Means Looking Back We worked in exactly the conditions that made this vulnerability real: single and double-deck games, hand shuffles, human dealers doing procedure the same way, hand after hand. That world doesn't really exist anymore, and understanding why is more interesting than just knowing that it changed. The game evolved because the math demanded it. Every shoe, every automatic shuffler, every rule change since is really the industry's answer to a mathematical fact that a small group of us understood and used before most people even knew to look for it.
